At present, two different Psychology study programmes run in parallel. The old-style doctoral program is a four-year study that will officially end 1 Sept. 2007. It is no longer possible to enroll in this program. The three-year Bachelor of Psychology program began 1 Sept 2002. Beginning Sept. 2004, it will also be possible to follow a Master of Psychology program. The major difference between the old doctoral and the new Bachelors/Masters (BaMa) programme is that the latter consists of a three-year study program finalised with a bachelor examination. After completing the bachelor degree, students may decide to enter the job market or may choose to continue their study and take the Master degree (a one-year program) in Groningen or at another university having the Psychology Bachelor degree as condition of admittance.

Master's programmes in Dutch--If you are interested in following a Dutch degree study at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you have to contact the university student counsellors. Please write: admission@dienst.vu.nl. They will inform you about the necessary steps to be taken.

For the one-year Master's programme in Psychology, you select a specialization which follows on from the profile chosen for your Bachelor's degree: Work and Organizational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, Psychology of Childhood and Adolescence, or Social Psychology.

Earning your PhD at the VU Amsterdam--A Master's degree is the prerequisite to be eligible to work on a doctorate (PhD-thesis). The project takes at least four years and consists of independent research, supervised by a professor ('promotor'), who has consented to lend his or her assistance. The doctorate candidate ('promovendus') is not a student, nor is he or she registered as such at the university. The promovendus is required to incorporate the findings of his or her research in a doctoral dissertation ('proefschrift'), and to defend it in a public sitting of the university's Council of Deans. A dissertation may be written in Dutch, English or French, but must be defended in Dutch, unless permission is granted to conduct it in one of the other two languages.

Most doctorate candidates are employed by the university as trainee research assistants ('Assistent in Opleiding', AIO) or as a trainee researcher ('Onderzoeker in Opleiding', OIO). The candidate may also be employed elsewhere or carry out research in his or her own time. However, in order to work in the Netherlands, foreign candidates must have a residence permit specifically for this purpose.
