ILC Welcomes New Chairperson and New INSNET Editor

Dr. Mariana Cherner has accepted the position of chairperson of the International Liaison Committee and Dr. Patricia Klaas has accepted the editorship of INSNET, the bulletin of the International Neuropsychological Society. They will be replacing longtime chairperson Dr. Bernice Marcopulos and INSNET editor Dr. Helen Haanes.

Dr. Cherner is an Associate Professor in Residence in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego, where she conducts research on the neurocognitive consequences of HIV, hepatitis C, and substance abuse. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she is a native Spanish speaker with a longstanding interest in cross-cultural applications of neuropsychological assessment. She has a U.S. federally funded grant to study the cognitive and functional consequences of HIV infection in Spanish speakers from the border region with Mexico. As co-director of the International Core of HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center in San Diego, she provides consultation and training to investigators seeking to implement methods of neurobehavioral assessment in diverse sociocultural and linguistic settings. She is also a coinvestigator or consultant on a number of active and proposed studies focused on neuroAIDS in resource-limited settings, including Brazil, Cameroon, Nigeria, and South Africa, as well as on a traumatic brain injury grant assessing patients in Bolivia. Contact Dr. Cherner at chair@ilc-ins.org. or type your message in the message box below.

Dr. Klaas is a pediatric neuropsychologist at the Cleveland Clinic who works with children from a variety of medical populations. The main body of her work is with children who have refractory epilepsy and are being considered for epilepsy surgery. Most of her recent research is with this population, but she is hoping to expand the scope of her studies to include children with congenital heart defects and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. Please contact Dr. Klaas at editor@ilc-ins.org. if you have ideas for future articles for INSNET.
